About the Event:
The theme for this gathering is “Crossing Boundaries between Disciplines: Cross Art-Form Practice within the Participatory Arts Sector.” As artists, we often find ourselves confined within the boundaries of our own disciplines. However, this session is designed to challenge those boundaries and explore the rich possibilities that emerge when we step beyond them.
Through a combination of case studies, interactive activities, and group discussions, we will explore key questions such as:
- How can we effectively communicate across disciplines to enhance collaboration?
- What is the value of cross art-form practice for community participants and participatory arts practitioners?
- What challenges arise when we attempt to cross these boundaries, and how can we overcome them?
The gathering is facilitated by:
- Sue Caudle – Artistic Director of DIY Theatre, a company that challenges perceptions and barriers, celebrating diversity and creativity, particularly among artists and leaders with learning disabilities.
- Sarah Atter – A Manchester-based musician with extensive experience in community projects, including work in healthcare, education, and criminal justice, as well as collaborative cross-art form projects.
Contributors:
We are thrilled to have contributors who will share their experiences and insights through case studies:
- Ruthie Collins – A writer and arts practitioner specialising in socially engaged and participatory arts, known for making the arts inclusive and accessible.
- Conrad Molleson – An Edinburgh-based artist and educator who integrates music with moving images to create engaging and playful experiences.
- John Whall – Participation and Outreach Lead at MBD, with expertise in leveraging VR, 3D animation, and digital skills for participatory artwork creation.
